July 4th, 3779.

It was graduation day. I was named the valedictorian for the class of 3779. They called me up to give a speech to the graduates. I was so incredibly nervous. I had to keep telling myself that I could do this. I reach the stage, and I thought that I would’ve died from a heart attack. I could feel my heart racing and tears begging for release. I was getting terrified with each passing step. Don’t screw this up, Cally, I screamed in my head as I stand in front of the podium.

I take a deep breath, and I begin to speak. “Hello, everybody. Before we begin, I’d like to thank God for bringing us all here tonight. Without Him, I wouldn’t have made so many good friends.”

The crowd cheers, and an applause roars.

“With that said and done, I’d like to say that the last year we had has been one to remember. I was honored to have named Trance Oddman and Will Nightreach as this year’s prom queen and king. It was a fun time for all of us during that night. The year had its ups and downs, but as we look back at them, we’ll laugh and say how much we’ve grown in Christ since then. And as for my former track teammates, it was fun always beating you guys in every race you challenged me to.”

I hear them laugh.

“And to my teachers, thanks for giving us a few weeks to get caught up on the gibberish you tried to teach us.”

I could hear them snicker at my joke.

“And for my family, thanks for sticking with me through the years. And for being a complete nuisance, Oliver,” I say.

And I hear Oliver cheer, “And for being there for me whenever I needed it. You’re the best big brother.”

I was getting to the end of my speech. I had to look away from everyone when I sneezed. I turn back and say, “Sorry for the inconvenience.”

Someone from the crowd yells, “God bless you.”

“Thank you.” I proceed with the conclusion of my speech. “As we all venture out into God’s world, know that He’ll go with you. Never lose hope. Thank you all for coming tonight, and let’s hear it for the senior class of 3779, people.”

Everyone, including me, shout joyfully and throw our graduation caps into the air. I make my way over to my family when all the excitement has settled down. I find them.

“That was a nice speech, Cally,” my mother says as she hugs me. “I’m so proud of you.”

“Thanks, Mama.”

“Well, it’s about time you graduated,” Oliver says as he gives me a hug.

“Well, better late than never,” I say and slug his arm. He rubs where I strike him.

“Well, that’s something I’m looking forward to. Not being abused by my little sister.”

“You know you’ll miss me,” I say as I give him a hug.

“Will that include me?” someone asks from behind me. I turn around and see Hayden with his arms stretched out to me.
